As the municipal corporation (MC) readies to charge property tax from residential properties in villages, it has sought information from both Punjab and Haryana governments on how they brought villages in the tax ambit and about tax slabs.
Source said the MC has written a letter to the two states as it wants to first understand the best criteria to impose tax on residential properties. As the area of properties and amount against them matters in the exercise, the MC wants to clear all such aspects before starting the move.
"It is requested to provide information on how many residential properties of erstwhile villages have been brought under property tax net along with slabs," said the letter.
Currently, only commercial properties of villages are paying property tax. "All these initiatives are attempts to increase the revenue of the MC. As developmental works in villages have started, the authority is mulling to bring residential properties under tax ambit," sources said.
