The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given approval for the construction of a 6-lane Zirakpur Bypass. This bypass will begin at the junction with NH-7 (Zirakpur–Patiala) and conclude at the junction with NH-5 (Zirakpur–Parwanoo), covering a total distance of 19.2 kilometers across the states of Punjab and Haryana. The project will be executed under the NH(O) category using the Hybrid Annuity Mode.
The overall estimated cost for the project stands at Rs 1878.31 crore.
The Zirakpur Bypass originates at the junction with NH-7 (Chandigarh–Bathinda) in Zirakpur, aligns with the Punjab Government’s Master Plan within Punjab, and ends at the junction with NH-5 (Zirakpur–Parwanoo) in Panchkula, Haryana. This alignment helps bypass the densely populated and congested areas of Zirakpur in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana.
The main objective of this project is to reduce traffic congestion in Zirakpur, Panchkula, and nearby regions by rerouting vehicles coming from Patiala, Delhi, and Mohali Aerocity, while also offering seamless connectivity to Himachal Pradesh. This initiative is designed to cut down travel time and ensure smooth traffic flow through the busy urban stretches of NH-7, NH-5, and NH-152.
The government has initiated efforts to ease traffic in the Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali urban cluster by developing a comprehensive road network, which is envisioned to form a ring road as shown in the map. The Zirakpur Bypass plays a key role in this overall plan.
Mohali is set for a major upgrade as GMADA plans a 183 acre Expo City near the airport belt bringing exhibitions, business hubs, jobs and long term investment opportunities to the region.
Traffic relief is in sight as the Hallomajra To Zirakpur service lane expansion races toward a March 31 deadline aiming to ease congestion and improve daily commutes.
