Mohali: For a variety of irregularities, particularly in granting licenses to builders, the Zirakpur Municipal Council may be implicated in a scandal of Rs 1,000 crore, not merely Rs 350 crore as earlier claimed. In response to a query from the assembly committee about the Rs 350-crore scandal, Zirakpur Municipal Corporation officials themselves disclosed this.
The committee was established to examine different ULBs, look for irregularities, take corrective measures, and document them. The police were also instructed by the committee to locate the offenders and file formal complaints against them.
Regarding this, the committee has also instructed the Zirakpur MC to provide a thorough response within a month.
Urban local bodies met with the 13-member committee led by AAP MLA Gurpreet Singh Gogi of the Ludhiana West seat to evaluate the works.
In their response, the Zirakpur MC representatives proposed that the vigilance conduct a comprehensive investigation into any financial irregularities.
According to the officials, there is a deeply connected conspiracy between the builders and the MC officials who approved the construction of residential and commercial structures, as well as housing societies.
It should be noted that Zirakpur MC was the subject of a vigilance investigation that was started in 2019. A lot of commercial structures received fictitious NOCs, and unfinished building plans were accepted.
Girish Verma, an executive officer (EO) who was formerly working at Nagar Council in Zirakpur, Mohali, was the subject of a disproportionate assets complaint filed by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau in December 2022. The officer amassed enormous riches via the misuse of his official position.
