The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has intensified its anti encroachment drive in Phases 10 and 11 aiming to restore civic discipline, reclaim public spaces and ensure better infrastructure management. With rapid urbanization, several residential and commercial areas in these phases had seen unregulated constructions and encroachments leading to congestion, blocked pathways and difficulties in civic maintenance. The recent initiative demonstrates the MC’s commitment to a cleaner, well organized and more citizen friendly city.
Illegal structures and encroachments not only disrupt the aesthetic and functional balance of the city but also pose serious safety risks. Narrowed roads, obstructed footpaths and unauthorized extensions can hamper emergency services and reduce the efficiency of public utilities. By targeting encroachments the MC aims to improve traffic flow, enhance civic amenities and create safer environments for residents.
The drive specifically focuses on key residential colonies, commercial pockets and semi developed plots that have seen unauthorized developments over the years. Residential areas in Phase 10 and commercial hubs in Phase 11 are being carefully surveyed with notices issued to property owners who have violated municipal regulations. This targeted approach ensures fairness while prioritizing critical locations affecting the broader community.
The operation also targeted unauthorized street vendors & resulting in the seizure of illegal carts that had been occupying main roads and market parking areas. These encroachments not only obstructed traffic flow but also disrupted pedestrian movement and posed sanitation challenges making their removal a key part of the Municipal Corporation’s drive.
The MC has adopted a structured approach to enforcement. Initially property owners are issued notices and given timelines to remove illegal constructions voluntarily. Legal backing ensures that any non compliance can be addressed through structured demolition or removal actions. On ground enforcement teams working in coordination with local authorities have begun clearing minor encroachments ensuring smooth traffic and accessible public spaces.
In Phase 11 several residents reportedly set up shops in front of their homes while others constructed temporary sheds, boards, platforms and extensions that occupied public spaces for years. These encroachments disrupted traffic flow and hindered proper sanitation. The Municipal Corporation confirmed that it had received multiple complaints from citizens regarding these obstructions.
While some residents and businesses may face short term inconvenience the long term benefits are substantial. Citizens will enjoy wider roads, unobstructed footpaths and improved civic services. Reclaimed spaces can be used for parks, sidewalks and drainage systems contributing to better urban planning. For businesses a cleaner and more organized environment can attract more customers & enhance local economic activity. The MC has also set up a transparent appeal process to address concerns of affected parties ensuring fair enforcement.
The Commissioner stated that the full cost of demolition would be recovered from the encroachers along with an added penalty on their property tax bills. Since many individuals continued their illegal occupations despite repeated notices the Municipal Corporation had to use large machinery to clear the unauthorized structures.
The MC plans to extend this initiative to other phases in the city with Phase 12 and Phase 13 next in line. Regular monitoring, stricter patrolling and the use of surveillance technology will prevent re encroachments. Coupled with citizen cooperation these steps are aimed at maintaining a sustainable, safe and orderly urban environment.
The anti encroachment drive in Phases 10 and 11 underscores Mohali MC’s commitment to urban development, safety and citizen welfare. By reclaiming public spaces and ensuring regulatory compliance the city is set to become cleaner, better organized and more accessible for everyone. Citizen support and awareness will play a crucial role in sustaining these improvements for years to come.
