Major Crackdown: Illegal Structures Near Sukhna Lake Demolished

The Mohali district administration carried out a focused anti encroachment drive in Naya Gaon taking action against unauthorised constructions in the Kansal catchment area of Sukhna Lake as part of efforts to protect the eco sensitive zone and restore natural balance

In a strong move to protect one of the Tricity’s most sensitive ecological zones authorities have carried out a major crackdown on illegal constructions near Sukhna Lake. .

Why the Action Became Necessary

Sukhna Lake is not just a popular recreational spot it is a protected ecological asset. Over time unauthorised buildings, extensions and makeshift structures had mushroomed around its periphery raising serious concerns about soil erosion, water pollution and obstruction of natural water channels.

Officials stated that violators had been served multiple notices well in advance allowing sufficient time for voluntary compliance. Despite this several structures continued to flout land use regulations and environmental norms with some encroachments even blocking natural drainage paths & prompting decisive action by the authorities.

How the Demolition Drive Was Carried Out

After detailed surveys and verification authorities issued notices to violators and proceeded with on ground action. Heavy machinery was deployed to remove illegal buildings and extensions that had come up in violation of approved norms. Law and order arrangements were put in place to ensure the operation was conducted smoothly & despite resistance at some locations.

The  Demolition Drive exercise was overseen by the designated nodal officer with joint teams drawn from the AME division building inspection wing, general inspection staff and the executive office actively involved. Adequate police deployment including the presence of the Naya Gaon SHO was ensured to maintain law and order and facilitate the smooth conduct of the operation.

Environmental Protection Takes Centre Stage

The drive was not merely about enforcing building rules it was aimed at safeguarding the lake’s ecosystem. Encroachments near water bodies often disrupt drainage patterns and accelerate environmental degradation. By clearing these illegal structures officials hope to restore the natural buffer zone around the lake and prevent further damage.

The demolition drive signals a zero tolerance approach toward encroachments that threaten public land, natural drainage systems and the fragile environment surrounding the lake.

Public Reaction and Wider Impact

While the action caused temporary inconvenience and sparked debate among affected occupants, many residents and environmental advocates welcomed the move. They see it as a necessary step toward preserving a shared natural resource that serves generations of citizens. Cleaner surroundings, improved drainage and reduced environmental pressure are among the anticipated benefits.

Authorities have made it clear that public land and eco sensitive zones cannot be misused. Regular monitoring of the lake’s surroundings is expected to continue to prevent fresh violations.

Final Word

The demolition of illegal structures near Sukhna Lake marks a crucial step in reclaiming public land and protecting a vital ecological zone. By prioritising the environment over encroachment, the administration has reinforced the principle that sustainable urban growth must respect nature, not overpower it.

The administration made it clear that no illegal construction will be tolerated in the Kansal catchment area along Patiala Ki Rao or in any other notified protected zonesOfficials warned that any future breach High Court orders will be met with swift and stringent action leaving no room for non compliance.
