Government of India Greenlights INR 10,570 Crore Metro Projects for Chandigarh, Mohali Panchkula

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has approved the much anticipated Tricity metro project, which would build a 39-km metro train network connecting Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula. Excluding the heritage sectors from sectors 1 to 30, this ambitious mass rapid transit system (MRTS) is expected to cost INR 10,570 Crore. Among other infrastructure upgrades, the project includes building bus terminals, depots, and improvements at congested crossings in addition to the metro rail network.

The Tricity Metro Project is built on the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which the governments of Chandigarh, Haryana, and Punjab gave in-principle approval for in April 2023. Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Zirakpur, New Chandigarh, and Pinjore would all be included in the ultimate metro network, which will be completed in two phases.

Between 2027 and 2037, the first phase would cover important roads such as Sarangpur to Panchkula ISBT, Rock Garden to Zirakpur ISBT via the airport and Mohali Industrial Area, and Grain Market Chowk in Sector 39 to Transport Nagar in Sector 26. The following phase, slated for construction after 2037, will include the installation of four more routes.
