Mohali has witnessed a decisive civic action as authorities launched a major encroachment drive to remove illegal structures across key areas of the city. The move signals a renewed push toward planned urban development, public safety and rule based growth sending a clear message that violations of building norms will no longer be overlooked.
Over the years unauthorized constructions and encroachments have steadily increased pressure on Mohali’s civic infrastructure. Illegal extensions, blocked public pathways and misuse of residential or commercial spaces not only disrupt urban planning but also pose safety risks. Complaints from residents regarding traffic bottlenecks, drainage issues and reduced public space prompted authorities to act.
The recent drive aims to restore order, improve accessibility and ensure that development aligns with approved layouts and regulations.
The action primarily targeted pockets where violations had been flagged repeatedly. Structures built beyond sanctioned limits, temporary constructions on public land and encroachments affecting roads and common areas were taken up during the operation. These locations had earlier received notices giving owners ample time to comply.
The drive zeroed in pending unauthorised constructions in Phases 3B1 and 3B2. Over 100 houses in Phase 7 were cleared followed by demolition action at more than 150 houses across Phases 3B1 and 3B2 marking one of the most extensive enforcement operations in the area.
The operation was carried out by the Mohali Municipal Corporation & GMADA with teams from enforcement and planning departments working in coordination. Officials stated that the drive followed due legal process, including prior verification of records and issuance of notices.
Civic teams deployed heavy machinery including JCBs to dismantle railings, planters, fencing and other unauthorised additions built beyond residential property limits clearing encroachments from public spaces while law and order arrangements ensured that the process remained smooth and orderly.
The operation focused strictly on unauthorized sections, ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding areas.Officials emphasized that the action was not arbitrary but based on documented violations of building bylaws.
Despite resistance from some residents Municipal Corporation & GMADA teams moved ahead and removed multiple unauthorised sheds, ramps and extensions that were found to be in violation of approved building plans and encroaching on public land reaffirming the authority’s commitment to enforcement.
The immediate impact of the drive is already visible. Cleared spaces have improved road visibility, eased congestion and restored access to public land. Residents have welcomed the move noting better traffic flow and enhanced safety, especially in densely populated sectors.
In the long run such actions are expected to strengthen civic discipline and preserve Mohali’s planned character.
The drive serves as a reminder that compliance with building regulations is mandatory. Authorities have indicated that similar operations will continue with regular inspections planned to prevent fresh encroachments. Property owners are being urged to verify approvals before undertaking any construction.
MC officials clarified that the drive was conducted in strict adherence to a 2022 directive of the Punjab and Haryana High Court which mandated the removal of all illegal encroachments from public land leaving no scope for discretionary action.
Mohali’s encroachment drive reflects a broader commitment to sustainable urban management. As the city grows balancing development with regulation will be key. Continued enforcement combined with public cooperation can help ensure that Mohali remains organized, accessible and livable for the long term.
