After years of deliberation and planning, the Chandigarh Tricity may finally have a solution to its commuting woes as the proposed Metro project has received a significant boost. The Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) had put forth the project for approval, and on Thursday, the Chandigarh administration, as well as the states of Punjab and Haryana, gave their in-principle approval for the project.
This development marks a major milestone for the Metro project, which has been in the works for nearly 14 years. The proposed Metro network is expected to greatly enhance the connectivity of the tricity and offer a reliable, fast, and comfortable mode of transportation to commuters.
However, the ball now lies in the court of the central government, which will have to provide the necessary approvals and funding for the project to come to fruition. With the stakeholders already on board, it is hoped that the central government will soon give its nod, paving the way for the long-awaited Metro project to finally become a reality in the Chandigarh Tricity.
The esteemed Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, Banwarilal Purohit, spearheaded a critical meeting on Thursday, concerning the comprehensive mobility plan (CMP) for the tricity, held in the picturesque city of Chandigarh. The meeting, attended by the Chandigarh administration, as well as the governments of Punjab and Haryana, proved to be a milestone in the region's infrastructure development.
During the meeting, the transit infrastructure proposal, which was prepared by the expert Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES), received an in-principle nod from all the stakeholders present, including the esteemed chair. The project, which will require a final clearance from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, entails a 39-kilometer Metro network that will span across Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, while conscientiously avoiding the heritage sectors of Sector 1 to 30.
In addition to the Metro project, the mass rapid transport system (MRTS) will encompass an array of supporting infrastructure, including bus terminals, bus depots, and geometrical improvements at busy intersections, among other features. The estimated cost of the project is an impressive INR 10,570 crore, a sum that testifies to the project's scale and ambition.
This visionary move by the region's stakeholders is expected to tackle the burgeoning traffic chaos in the tricity, making commuting more seamless and efficient for its residents. It is a step towards fulfilling the vision of a modern, connected, and dynamic tricity, all under the astute leadership of Governor Purohit.
What RITES has proposed
In a groundbreaking development, the prestigious Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) has revealed that the proposed Metro network, as per their comprehensive mobility plan, will be implemented in two phases, comprising of two corridors.
According to the RITES report, the first corridor will stretch 22.5 kilometers from Chandigarh's Grain Market Chowk to Panchkula, while the second will run from Sector-43 ISBT in Chandigarh to Saneta village in Mohali, with a total length of 16.5 kilometers. The proposed Metro network is expected to revolutionize commuting in the tricity, offering seamless connectivity and ease of access across various locations.
In addition to the Metro project, the mobility plan, as crafted by the expert team at RITES, is comprised of a comprehensive range of short, medium, and long-term transport improvement proposals. These proposals include a focus on enhancing parking management, junctions, pedestrian infrastructure, road infrastructure, local bus systems, intermodal interchanges, and integrated freight complexes. The holistic approach adopted by RITES aims to create a modern, efficient, and sustainable transit system for the tricity.
This visionary plan, developed by RITES, has the potential to transform the transportation landscape in the tricity, offering a more convenient, affordable, and eco-friendly mode of transportation for its residents. The tricity's stakeholders are poised to take a giant leap forward in urban development, thanks to the astute leadership of Governor Banwarilal Purohit and the expertise of the RITES team.
