Airport Road Traffic Relief Ahead as GMADA Introduces Dumbbell Roundabouts

GMADA  is set to transform Airport Road with three state of the art  dumbbell roundabouts . With a completion period of just three months traffic normalization within 30 to 45 days. This smart infrastructure upgrade promises faster commutes, reduced congestion and a smoother safer driving experience for daily travelers across the busy corridor.

A Major Step Toward Smarter Traffic Management

Daily commuters on  Airport Road  are set to experience much needed relief as the  Greater Mohali Area Development Authority ( GMADA ) moves forward with a modern traffic upgrade. The authority has approved the construction of  three dumbbell roundabouts to address chronic congestion on one of the busiest routes connecting  Chandigarh Mohali  and the  international airport .

Why Airport Road Needs Immediate Intervention

Over the years Airport Road has seen a sharp increase in traffic due to rapid urban expansion, commercial activity and rising airport connectivity. Peak hour traffic jams, frequent signal delays and slow moving intersections have made daily travel stressful for residents, professionals and travelers.

Understanding Dumbbell Roundabouts

Dumbbell roundabouts are a smart intersection design featuring two circular junctions connected by a short roadway. This layout allows vehicles to move continuously with minimal stopping. By reducing dependency on traffic signals and improving lane discipline these roundabouts help regulate speed and streamline vehicle movement.

Key Highlights of GMADA’s Project

GMADA  plans to construct the roundabouts at high impact junctions where congestion remains persistent throughout the day. The project will be executed in phases to minimize inconvenience to commuters. Once operational the new design is expected to significantly cut waiting times and improve traffic safety.

  • GMADA has announced that the first  dumbbell shaped  roundabout will be constructed near  Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan in  Sohana targeting smoother traffic in the area.
  • The second roundabout is set for the busy light point connecting Sectors  68 69 78 and  79 designed to ease congestion and streamline vehicle movement across these sectors.
  • Meanwhile the third roundabout will link Sectors  68 67 79 and  80 ensuring better traffic flow and faster commutes along this crucial stretch of Airport Road.

Benefits for Daily Commuters and Travelers

The introduction of  dumbbell roundabouts will result in smoother traffic flow, reduced travel time and safer road crossings. Lower idling time will also help reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions contributing to better air quality along the corridor.

A Boost for Tricity’s Infrastructure Growth

This initiative reflects  GMADA’s  long term vision for sustainable urban mobility. Improved road efficiency enhances airport access, supports economic activity and increases the overall appeal of surrounding residential and commercial areas.

What Lies Ahead

With this project Airport Road is set to become a benchmark for modern traffic solutions in the region. GMADA’s focus on smart infrastructure promises lasting congestion relief and a more comfortable commuting experience for years to come.
